Common Bike is a bicycle sharing system, an easy way to rent a bike and enjoy biking around the city. Common Bike is initiated by RMIT Industrial Design as a new chapter in Melbourne's public transport network. An increasing number of big cities around the world have developed share-bike systems as an additional mode of public transport. Some systems are similar to each other, but there are many differences to suit the needs of the particular city or country. As a simple and scalable community based concept, common bike will be the starting point for a bright bike sharing future in Melbourne. In the Netherlands, a small community based system with three locations grew to be a service at 180 railway stations with 60 000 customers. Common Bike has a similar starting point, and is as promising as the Dutch System. The idea behind Common Bike is to develop a community based system that suits Melbourne as a city and supports local economy. We want to develop it for and with Melburians. Common Bike uses and contributes to the open source bike sharing software. This open source software will help smaller parties all over the world to start their own local community based bike sharing. |
